Newborn screening is a public health program that aims to detect at the earliest stage certain congenital conditions that may lead to mental retardation or morbidity if left untreated. The newborn screening program in the Philippines started in 1996 as a concerted effort of 24 hospitals in Metro Manila. The national implementation of the program came after the signing of the Republic Act 9288 or the Newborn Screening Act of 2004 which mandates that every baby born in the Philippines be given the opportunity to undergo newborn screening and thus be spared from heritable conditions that can lead to mental retardation and death if left undetected and untreated. </div>

In 2014, through the DOH Administrative Order No. 2014-0045, expanded Newborn Screening was implemented increasing the panel of disorders from six (6) to more than twenty (20) disorders falling under various types of conditions namely: disorders of amino acid metabolism, organic acid metabolism, disorders of fatty acid oxidation, carbohydrate metabolism, biotin metabolism, as well as cystic fibrosis, hemoglobinopathies and endocrine disorders. This important move is foreseen to benefit many Filipino newborns who would otherwise remain undiagnosed with the basic 6-test.<br />
<br />
The PhilHealth Circular provides that the enhanced package shall be dispensed to qualified newborns delivered in all accredited health care institutions that perform deliveries and provide newborn care which include hospitals, infirmaries/dispensaries, and birthing homes/lying-in clinics.<br />
<br />
To ensure entitlement to the said benefit, newborns need to be in the facility for at least 24 hours after birth except those who warrant immediate referral to a higher level facility.<br />
<br />
The state health insurer encouraged all active and expecting PhilHealth members to avail of the said package in order to provide newborns with the needed services that will help reduce morbidity and mortality while reducing health care costs associated with treatment of lifelong debilitating conditions.</div>

Allianz Philippines, the Philippine Heart Association (PHA), and the Philippine Society of Pediatric Cardiology (PSPC) recently staged the 13th edition of Camp Braveheart at the Manila Ocean Park with the theme, “The Hero Within.”<br />

Conceptualized in 2007, Camp Braveheart seeks to help post-surgical children with heart diseases to transition from a life of limited activity and exposure to one with vision, hope, and fruitful experience.<br />
<br />
Dr. Maricel Regino, the chairperson of the Council on Congenital Heart Disease, said that Camp Braveheart is a program that seeks to encourage children who were born with heart disease and underwent surgery to live a normal life like other kids.<br />
<br />
“They serve as an inspiration to others who want to live a good life after surgery,” she said during the opening of Camp Braveheart.<br />
<br />
Dr. Regino was joined in the event by Dr. Aurelia G. Leus, vice president of the PHA; Dr. Ninfa J. Villanueva, president of the PSPC; and Gino Riola, senior vice president and head of Market Management Center of Excellence (MM COE) of Allianz Asia.<br />
<br />
This is the second year that Allianz Philippines has partnered with the PHA, and Camp Braveheart is just one of the projects that it is supporting.<br />

For this year’s celebration of the Heart Month, Allianz Philippines has been declared the PHA’s official life insurance partner.<br />

“The PHA has advocacies that resonate with our corporate social responsibility aspirations in the Philippines. We are privileged to be their partner in promoting a healthy lifestyle among Filipinos,” Riola added.<br />

Among the children who took part in Camp Braveheart were three-year-old Lilian Lucy Espiritu, who has been diagnosed with a ventricular septal defect, and fellow three-year-old Piel Akron, who has been diagnosed with critical pulmonary stenosis.<br />
<br />
“We are fortunate to have been invited to Camp Braveheart. I hope that they would continue activities like this for post-operation kids,” Lilian’s mom, Locelyn, said.<br />
<br />
She added that they are already looking forward to next year’s Camp Braveheart.<br />
<br />
Piel’s mom, MJ, is likewise thankful for the event as it introduced her to other parents with children that have been diagnosed with heart disease. They were encouraged to join Camp Braveheart by Piel’s doctor, Dr. Jose Jonas Del Rosario of the Philippine Children’s Medical Center (PCMC) and Philippine General Hospital (PGH).<br />
<br />
“As parents, we have to learn how to let go for them to learn on their own. I wish that Piel would continue to get well so he won’t undergo any more procedures,” MJ added.<br />
<br />
Staying true to its theme this year, Camp Braveheart celebrated the children who, despite their young age, continue to show strength in the face of difficulties.<br />
<br />
This year’s activities included an Oceanarium tour, Sea Lion Show, Shark & Ray Dry Encounter, Creepy Crawlies, games, and face painting, which the children all thoroughly enjoyed.<br />
<br />
Locelyn, MJ, and their fellow parents also had a fun time participating in the financial literacy exercise conducted by Allianz Philippines volunteer employees and learning about Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), too. They also attended a lecture on the 52100 Campaign, which encourages people to lead a healthy lifestyle by having five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, having only two hours of screen time, doing an hour of physical activity, avoiding sugary and sweetened beverages, and saying no to both smoking and secondhand smoking.<br />

Dr. Chen, who was appointed to the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board last year, has over 28 years of experience in food and nutritional science. A doctorate degree graduate of food science and nutrition at the University of Massachusetts in the United States, Dr. Chen returned to Hong Kong and became a professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is now the head of the Graduate Division of the School of Life Sciences at the University.<br />

Dr. Chen is a multi-awarded nutrition expert. These awards include the Advancement of Application of Agricultural and Food Chemistry Award by the American Chemical Society in 2016, the High Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Award for Natural Science by the Ministry of Education in China in 2010, and the Research Excellence Award by The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2009. He received a fellowship award from the Agricultural and Food Chemistry Division of American Chemical Society in 2012 and another from the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) in 2015.<br />

Dr. Chen has also served as deputy chairman of the Expert Committee on Food Safety at the Food and Health Bureau of Hong Kong SAR Government, council member of the China Nutrition Society and associate editor for the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.<br />

Four unmedicated and natural childbirths brought Thammie Sy to formalize her passion for helping mothers through birthing, childcare, and parenting. “I want other moms to have beautiful, empowering experiences as well. There is no one way to have a beautiful and empowering birth. One thing we can all have though no matter our birth experience is the right attitude and mindset towards it,” says the US-certified doula and childbirth educator.<br />

“It is my desire to help parents establish the right perspective about birth by giving them a better understanding of what happens during birth so they can make informed choices regarding throughout the process. And by equipping them with skills to help prepare them for labor and birth.”<br />
Here are Thammie’s eight pregnancy and childbirth tips for every mom, and even dad!<br />
<br />
<b>1. Healthy pregnancy, healthy labor. </b>This was one thing I should have taken seriously when I was pregnant. I made progress, in the sense that I became healthier and healthier with each succeeding pregnancy. If I had known then what I know now about the role of nutrition and exercises in preparing my body and in helping increase baby’s likelihood of positioning himself/herself optimally, I would have maintained a healthier diet and I would have done prenatal exercises to condition my body for labor and birth better.<br />
<br />
<b>2. Know how to filter what you hear and read. </b>With all the information available to us now, we have to know which are reliable sources of information. I remember I used to panic after spending more time than I should have on Google and Facebook. There are many opinions and voices when it comes to your pregnancy and childbirth. Though most do raise valid points in their own right, you have to know which ones are aligned with your values and context, and which ones are not. We also have to understand that our story is unique, and one is not better than the other.<br />
<br />
<b>3. Use this time to discuss with your husband/partner how you want your family to be once the baby comes. </b>There will be more changes once the baby arrives. Now would be a good time to discuss and have a vision for your family. What is most important to you? What are your negotiables and non-negotiables? How will the baby change the dynamics of your current set of priorities and your schedule? What lifestyle adjustments would you need to start making now before your baby comes?<br />
<br />
<b>4. Be wise about where you spend your money. </b>There are so many new innovations now that are geared towards helping moms, babies, and even dads enjoy their transition to parenthood and having a newborn. I use the word “enjoy” because most of these products really do give us parents a sense of “wow, this is so nice to have!” But we have to know which ones are must-haves, and which ones are really just nice to have. Invest in a few essential must-haves, and more importantly, invest in building skills and knowledge and in your relationships.<br />
<br />
<b>5. Tune in. </b>With all the changes in our pregnant bodies plus the necessary preparations we have to think of as our estimated time of giving birth draws near, it is not a surprise for many us to feel overwhelmed with all kinds of emotions. We are concerned with the baby who is still inside the womb, at the same time we are already thinking of how it will be like once he/she finally comes out. We are coping with the changes that pregnancy brings to our bodies, at the same time we are thinking about whether or not we can cope with the coming labor, or how we would be able to cope. Instead of ignoring all these emotions and thoughts, it is good to tune in and take time to explore and evaluate those feelings with your partner/husband, as well as birth professionals such as your care provider (OB or midwife), a doula, or a childbirth educator. Taking time to process your thoughts and emotions will make a huge difference in how you approach your birth and adjust to baby’s arrival.<br />
<br />
<b>6. Value having a birth team. </b>During the time of our ancestors, giving birth was more than just getting a baby out of one’s womb. They knew that giving birth is like a rite of passage for parents. It is a celebration of life. As such, the mothers were surrounded by a community of people who supported and empowered her--body, mind, and spirit. We need to surround ourselves with a birth team we can trust and whom we know will support us in the same way that previous generations did for their new mothers. Choose care providers (obstetricians or midwives) who support the kind of birth you wish to have and whom you can trust--no matter how your labor progresses and how your birth story plays out. Communicate with your husband/partner and get him involved as much as possible. Your partner plays a key role before, during, and after labor. Consider getting a doula who can provide physical, emotional, and informational support throughout your labor and who can advocate for you and your partner. Connect with like-minded parents whom you can exchange notes with and even those who have more experience and so can encourage you as you go through the challenging moments of birth and parenting.<br />
<br />
<b>7. Prepare a birth plan.</b> A birth plan is your vision for birth, written out and communicated with your birth team. It is a letter stating your wishes and preferences for birth. There you will describe the kind of management you wish to have, how you desire to cope with your labor, who you want to be involved in your birth, the kind of environment you want to birth in. A birth plan will help you, your partner, and your care provider clarifies and align your goals and beliefs and would help serve as a guide in making decisions during labor itself. A good birth plan will lay out options that would take into consideration variations in labor, should circumstances arise that would require a change of plans.<br />
<br />
<b>8. Attend a birth class. </b>Ever since I gave birth to my firstborn, I would always tell my pregnant friends to attend a childbirth class. Knowledge is indeed power when it comes to giving birth. And when I talk about knowledge translating to power, I mean it almost in a literal sense. Much of the pain women experience come from their fears and anxieties; and much of their fears and anxieties are influenced by either a lack of knowledge or a lack of skill. I have seen how the atmosphere and calm during labor can potentially affect its progress, and how reduced fear increases a woman’s ability to cope with her labor. Birth classes help you embrace the right mindset, provide you with sufficient knowledge, and equip you with the necessary skills to help prepare you for your labor and birth experience.<br />
<br />
As much as we love the role of being a mom, knowledge and proper preparation are crucial to ensure you always have it together from pregnancy to childbirth. <b>MANILA, July 26, 2018 </b>— On July 19, Acts of Kindness and Solaire Resorts and Casino unveiled, “A Celebration of Smiles: Creating smiles and second chances at life through art,” an art exhibit benefitting <a href="https://www.smiletrain.org/">Smile Train</a>, the world’s leading cleft charity. The exhibit is being held at Solaire's The Shoppes Artway.</div>

The exhibit features artwork by local and international artists, and some of Smile Train’s former cleft patients. The artwork will be available for sale until September 2 and will help raise funds and awareness for children with clefts in the Philippines.<br />

“We are grateful that Acts of Kindness is hosting this art exhibit to help raise awareness for Smile Train and our local programs here in the Philippines. Through this initiative, not only is Acts of Kindness able to showcase local and international talent, they are also able to help create a brighter future for children born with clefts,” said Kimmy Coseteng-Flaviano, Area Director for Smile Train in Southeast Asia.<br />

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Smile Train to help fund various local programs to provide free cleft surgery and comprehensive cleft care for Filipinos.<br />

<b>Celebrating Smiles Through Art</b><br />

The art exhibit showcases pieces from Roberto Sanchez, a DJ, and entrepreneur by trade, but creatively a self-taught artist; Jon Ray Fernandez, an airline professional turned mixed-media artist; Camy Cabral, a full-time artist with a background in design and advertising; and Albrecht Behmel, an award-winning artist and best-selling writer whose works have been shown in Paris, Beijing, New York, Moscow and London. Despite coming from different backgrounds with different styles of artwork, these artists came together to offer their pieces all for a good cause.<br />
<br />
Apart from the seasoned artists, some of the artwork is from Smile Train’s former cleft patients including Julia Robert Capili, Angel Ibo, Pearl Angeli Miranda, Jervy Hobo and Nickson Cabote. Having interacted with the guests, these individuals have shown how far they’ve come since their initial cleft surgery.<br />

“We hope that we can continue to raise awareness for children with clefts in the Philippines and all over the world through these small acts of kindness,” says Flaviano. “We want to continue to spread smiles and encourage others to do the same.”<br />

The advocacy is in support of Beko’s current global initiative of eliminating unhealthy eating habits, which affects Filipino families, especially the young ones.<br />

The ELAP campaign seeks to raise awareness about the rapidly growing rates of childhood malnutrition due to unhealthy eating habits.<br />
<br />
A report recently released by Food Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) revealed that Filipinos’ intake of fruits and vegetable is declining while their consumption of meat and eggs is increasing. An FNRI data from 1978 to 2013 revealed that we are eating more rice and meat while cutting down on fish, fruits, and vegetables.<br />
<br />
FNRI-NNC’s report released in 2017 also showed that 7 out of 10 households do not meet their dietary energy requirement and that a small portion of households met the estimated average requirement for nutrients (Vitamin A and C, riboflavin, and Thiamine).<br />
<br />
Kids are among those who are most affected by these habits, especially that they are passed on to them. Beko aims to tackle the issue by empowering and helping parents on the importance of healthy eating through its advocacy.<br />
<br />
“The Eat Like A Pro advocacy is important to us, especially with the issue of childhood malnutrition. We want to elevate the growing concerns of parents about the matter by making them realize that it is possible to promote healthy eating habits to support their child’s nutrition without having to compromise the taste of the meals they prepare, regardless of their budget,” said Zapanta.<br />
